It took me nearly 20 minutes to read this passage. We are often moved by Jesus reaction to Martha and Mary’s grief over the death of their brother Lazarus. (John 11:35) When we read of godly people being moved to sorrow we can feel the impact of their lives. Joseph is no different. At the death of his father, from whom he had been separated for years, he wept sorrowfully. When his brothers sought his favor after their father’s death, he wept again. What broke his heart? Maybe that they didn’t believe he had dropped any ill will toward them for selling him into slavery. But Joseph understood God’s plan and how their acts of selfish hatred and fulfilled God’s plan. Therefore, he had no ill-will to harbor. He saw God working out his will in acts of justice, and acts of selfishness.
