One of the first things David does in the opening pages of 2 Samuel is to tear his clothes in mourning (1:11). This was only the first time that David would mourn during his reign. He was devastated by the sin that had led to Saul’s death. In the third chapter he mourned Abner’s murder (3:31). Years later he rent his cloths when rebellious Absalom died (13:31). Though David was known as a man or war his heart remained tender as he lived through the ravages that sin brought into the heart of Israel.
