This section introduces us to Jephthah, the illegitimate son of Gilead. He shared a few traits with Abimelech son of Gideon in that his birth was outside of his father’s marriage. But that was all the two judges shared. Jephthah was willing to be used by God whereas Abimelech sought to rule that which was not rightfully his. Jephthah kept his vow even though it was a terrible price to pay. Abimelech was blood thirsty and selfish throughout his life. There are positive traits that Christians should imitate from Jephthah’s life where as Abimelech offers no redeeming examples.
