It took me about 12 minutes to read this passage. In chapter 7, verses 9 and 10, God reminds Israel that his commands for them have not changed. Since he made them his family there were four areas of focus to which God wants his people to attend when dealing with each other:
Love toward neighbors (and we know how Jesus defined neighbor)
Compassion with each other
Treating the poor and vulnerable with respect and honor
No plotting and scheming against each other
We know that we have heard lessons and sermons on these very topics in the modern church. Of course this only makes sense; since God still hasn’t changed any from before the time of creation.
The Message summaries the difference between God’s motivation and those religious leaders returning from the exile in verse 6:
“You’re interested in religion, I’m interested in people.” We need to grasp the difference and seek after a relationship with God.
